Kari Naal are the days, where moon position to that of star is not friendly. Kari Naal is generally considered as an inauspicious day in the State of Tamil Nadu. All Tamil speaking Hindus will avoid all days that are marked as kari naal. Functions like marriage, upanayanam, seemnadham, house warming ceremony etc will not be carried out on the day of kari naal. Also death on a particular kari naal day is considered as inauspicious and it is recommended to do some special remedies to mitigate the dosha.
Generally one should not do or start anything new and only regular things can be done. If we start anything new it is all possible to get things delayed without normal completion. Kari naal was mostly used by our elders. Even if looked as normal initially, the things get post-poned and sometimes becomes more expensive and give problems.
In such cases it is better to discontinue for some time and then restart on a good day. But it is believed as a local practice. The scholars of Tamil astrology say that there is no evidence about Kari Naal in the classic texts of Vedic Hindu astrology. However, major events are avoided on these days. If the Tamil calendar shows it as a kari naal, then it is better to avoid performing any auspicious functions on that day. Generally "Kari Naal" is considered to be a day which is not fit for travel.
Kari Naal is a group of inauspicious days as per the local tradition in Tamil Nadu and some parts of Kerala. According to Tamil astrology, kari naal days are constant from year to year. These days are precisely calculated based on Tamil month dates. For example first three days of Thai month are Kari Naal. These dates would not change over year. Usually there are 33 kari naal days in a solar (calendar) year. To be more specific there will be kari naal in each Tamil solar month. Note that the kari naal dates are same in Tamil month (not calculated based on English month dates).
The influence of solar radiation (sun’s ray) is generally much higher on some days than the other day of that month. These days are said to Kari Naal. Our forefathers have studied about the movements of solar system over the years and from that observation, they concluded that day with high ray of sun are considered as Kari Naal. These days are constant from year to year. These days are precisely calculated based on Tamil month dates.
For example first three days of Thai month are Kari Naal. When the sun's rays are high, all the glands and hormones in our body are stimulated slightly more than the average. This leads to more chances of getting emotional and making quick decisions without thinking. Due to this reason, our ancestors avoid performing functions and they also avoided kari naal to take any important decision. It is not a matter of observing astrologically but scientifically they have determined days in astronomy.
